SUNNYSIDE ELEMENTARY
Sunnyside students will honor past and present veterans on Veteran’s Day, Wednesday, November 11, 2009. We will begin with a morning assembly that day at 7:45 a.m. This will take the place of our regularly scheduled school-wide assembly on Monday.Special guest Fred Riedinger will lead us in the pledge to the flag. He will then explain why, historically, the flag is always folded in a special way.
Our Sunnyside Cub Scouts have been practicing folding the flag, and will demonstrate this to the school.
First grade students have been researching the five branches of the military, and each will be providing one interesting fact about the Navy, Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.
Through OPERATION CARING CLASSROOM, Sunnyside students have been matched with a small school, North Plains Elementary, on Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota. Each classroom will write to students at the Air Force Base, and throughout the year we will continue as pen pals.Paula Craig will also be a special guest. We are inviting any and all veterans to please come to help us honor those who give so much to protect our freedom.Operation Caring Classroom has provided us with informative student booklets and writing materials for each child at Sunnyside.
Our main emphasis is to educate students about the importance of Veteran’s Day. In doing so we will also incorporate Language Arts and Social Studies standards.
If you have any questions, or wish to be involved in any way, please contact Patti Heller at 259-5249, extension3710.
