Airport Passenger Traffic Continues Record Growth

Durango, CO – The Durango-La Plata County Airport continues its record growth in passenger traffic in contrast to the weak economy.  14,552 passengers boarded commercial airline flights at the Airport in September, a new record for the month and a 12.5-percent increase from September 2008.  Departing passengers filled 85 percent of all available seats.

“We were surprised to see such a large increase in traffic during September” said Ron Dent, Director of Aviation.  “Major runway construction during the month, which caused some disruptions, and the poor economy did not seem to inhibit air travel at Durango.  United Express has added capacity and Frontier Airlines will add a new morning departure in November so it appears that we will be able to sustain this growth for the near future,” Dent said.

Through the end of September, 221,075 passengers have departed or arrived on commercial airlines at the Durango-La Plata County Airport, a 6 percent increase from the same period in 2008.
