AT THE MARKET: from the field, off the vine, out of the kitchen

Biting into that perfect tomato is one of the best summertime activities. Sliced tomatoes, tomatoes in the salad, roasted tomatoes for soup, tomatoes on bread, tomatoes with fresh basil and mozzarella…. sounds a little bit like Bubba Gump’s Shrimp Co., doesn’t it? Tomato Co.s, err.. tomato farmers are picking perfect tomatoes as we speak and they’ll be at the farmers market over the next few weekends.

“Finding the perfect tomato isn’t about perfection at all. It’s about where the tomato is grown,” says Inis Reardon. “You can’t substitute earth worms and mother nature when it comes to tomatoes.  They need to be grown out in the field, in the dirt, under the sun. If you pick a tomato from the field, it will be great. Hot house tomatoes just don’t compare.” Inis and her husband Pete Reardon own Chimney Rock Farm Market.

This week, Chimney Rock will be bringing peaches, broccoli, spring mix, zucchini, squash, cucumbers, beets, eggplant, and of course tomatoes to the Durango Farmers Market.  And so much more! Chimney Rock has expanded- they’ve added a bakery. Preserves, vinegar, pies, conserves, pickled beets, honey, pesto, cream cheese spreads, cinnamon rolls, danishes, zucchini bread, 4 different kinds of loaf bread,  and other goodies made at the Bakery at Chimney Rock will also be for sale.
