DURANGO, Colo. – The City of Durango has been awarded an $86,400 grant from the Colorado Division of Wildlife’s “Fishing is Fun” Program to help with the cost of in-stream habitat improvements and bank stabilization of the Animas River between 9th Street and U.S. Highway 160. The objective of this pilot project, scheduled for August 2009, is to improve trout habitat, restore the integrity of the riparian zone along the western river bank, protect the native cottonwoods and reduce bank erosion.
The project was made possible by a partnership with the Five Rivers Chapter of Trout Unlimited and Animas RiverKeeper. Both organizations were instrumental in preparing a successful grant application and donating cash and in-kind services to the project.
