City of Durango Starts Automatic Meter Reading

Durango, CO – The City of Durango has started an AMR (Automated Meter Reading) project for the City’s water system.  This change will allow the City to use low power radio, electronics and advanced battery technologies to automate the monthly water meter reading process.  In addition to a more efficient and accurate meter readings, this system will provide a wealth of data that can be used to help improve the water system maintenance and efficiency.

For most water customers who are served by meters located in the public right-of-way, the process will be transparent and the only activity residents will notice is staff of Transparent Technologies or City staff working on the water meters in the pubic right-of-way.  Once the system is fully operational in 2010, customers may notice the absence of City staff performing the monthly water reading process.  At this time, the conversion to the AMR system will not cause any other changes to the City’s utility billing process.

The City of Durango has been working for over two years on the AMR project and the work included a live trial in the College Mesa area of the City.  The City selected Transparent Technologies, Inc., located in Boulder, Colorado to provide the AMR equipment and installation work.  Over the course of the next several months, credentialed employees of Transparent Technologies and City staff will be installing and connecting AMR devices to 5,500 of the approximately 6,500 meters on the City’s water system.

Customers with questions or concerns should contact the City of Durango Public Works Department at 375-4800.
