City to Sponsor Labor Day Motorcycle Parade
City to Sponsor Labor Day Motorcycle Parade
Following a two-year hiatus from downtown Durango, the City of Durango has stepped forward to become the official sponsor and organizer of what many remember as the Sunday morning motorcycle parade held over the Labor Day weekend in conjunction with the area’s motorcycle rally.
According to Bob Kunkel, CBD Business Development Manager for the City of Durango, “Durango has been interested in hosting a rally weekend event for several years, and the opportunity to revive the parade, which brings large crowds into downtown, worked out well for everyone.”
This year’s event will be expanded to include a morning Veterans Benefit Burrito Breakfast, several veterans’ dedications, and will include a parade of classic cars and hot rods just prior to the traditionally impressive motorcycle parade. All the events will be staged from the City’s new downtown TransitCenter parking lot and the First National Bank parking lot, both located on 8th street just off Camino del Rio. “Dedicating the morning activities and back-to-back Main Avenue parades to our veterans programs, specifically Building Homes for Heroes, gives the event purpose and cause for appreciation of our many freedoms,” added Kunkel.
The return of the event has drawn strong support from sponsors, volunteers, and the other rally weekend venues. The Durango Business Improvement District, Durango Area Tourism Office, and Durango Harley Davidson have providing cash sponsorships and many local organizations and citizen volunteers are contributing time and effort as well.
The public is invited to enjoy all of the event activities including the breakfast, the dedication ceremonies, appreciating the classic cars and motorcycles at the Transit Center and First National Bank parking lots, and Main Avenue parades.
