County Fire Ban Lifted
COUNTY FIRE BAN LIFTED
Upon the recommendation of Sheriff Duke Schirard and the local fire chiefs, the La Plata County Board of County Commissioners today lifted the fire ban for Zone 1 of La Plata County which includes all private lands in the unincorporated areas of La Plata County located south of US Highway 160, excluding those private lands in the town of Bayfield, Ignacio, Durango or any State, Federal or Tribal lands. The fire ban was originally enacted to minimize the high degree fire danger that existed in La Plata County due to a lack of moisture and extremely dry conditions. Since the fire ban was put in place, the measurement center at the Durango-La Plata County Airport has received 2.48 inches of rainfall. Other areas have received considerably more rainfall.
Although the fire ban has been lifted, residents are still encouraged to exercise caution when burning and to consult with their local fire chiefs prior to burning for specific safety instructions. In all cases, prior to burning, residents should contact their appropriate fire dispatch center. For residents in Fort Lewis Mesa, Durango Fire & Rescue and Upper Pine fire districts, call 385-2900. For residents in the southeast section of the county, in and around Ignacio, call 563-4401.
