Detailed Concepts Exploration on the Animas River

Durango, CO: The City of Durango, with the assistance of the National Park Service Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program, is hosting a 2-day workshop for the Durango Animas River Corridor Management Plan on February 15, 2012 from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. and February 16 from 2:00 – 5:30 p.m. at the Durango Community Recreation Center located at 2700 Main Avenue. The workshop will build upon information and ideas that were generated in public meetings in November, December and January. On February 15, workshop participants will explore, in detail, concepts, strategies and potential solutions to be included in the Management Plan. Participants will work in groups to explore:
River Access Points
Recreational Amenities (in-stream and shore improvement opportunities)
Conservation and Habitat
Regulation and Law Enforcement
Water Quality
Education and Community Outreach

On February 16, workshop participants will continue to refine the key strategies and solutions in each of the six topic areas. A public open house will be held February 16 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. to present the recommendations that come out of the workshop. The workshop is open to the public and the community is encouraged to attend both days. If full attendance is not possible, partial attendance is invited. Information from the November Open House and December Public Forum held in 2011 as well as the Issues Workshops held in January 2012, public comments and answers to questions that the community has asked so far can be found on the City of Durango website at www.durangogov.org by using the link on the home page for the Animas River Management Plan.

The concepts exploration workshops will be “hands-on” and highly interactive and will provide an opportunity for the community to shape the management plan for the Animas River in Durango. Participants are strongly encouraged to RSVP for the workshop. Please indicate which group you would like to participate in and whether you’ll be able to attend both days. For additional information and to RSVP, please contact Joanne Gantt at Durango Parks and Recreation Department at 375-7320 or [email protected]
