Durango is Touted in New eBook Series

The Great Towns of America Features Durango, Colorado

By Anne Klein, Durango Area Tourism Office

Of the nine great towns in Colorado, Durango was selected to be the first to merit its own electronic guidebook. The Great Towns of America by David and Joan Vokac identifies and describes the nation’s top 100 communities for a vacation or a lifetime. Now Durango, with more than one hundred listings, introduces the new guidebook series focused on individual great towns and their wealth of scenic, recreational and cultural treasures.

The new book entitled Durango, subtitled “The Best Restaurants, Attractions and Lodgings in One of America’s 100 Great Towns,” is an all-new book based on comprehensive new on-site field work. Durango was described by the authors as having “a beguiling charm that continues to provide the easygoing feeling of an all-American hometown.” It features a bonus for guests, according to the authors, “more bang for the buck here than in most of America’s other major vacation destinations.” In their concluding chapter on the livability of Durango they state that “not surprisingly, Durango scores well on all data indicators.” They praised Durango’s climate which they note “surpasses all of Colorado’s other great towns” for weather comfort, while still providing outstanding opportunity for winter sports made enjoyable here because of more sunshine.

David Vokac, a former urban planner turned full-time travel writer, is the author of a dozen guidebooks. He and his wife Joan, also a former planner, devoted two years and 80,000 miles criss-crossing the nation in search of the hundred best from among 221 semi-finalist getaway communities. Durango was included in their 2009 national guidebook, The Great Towns of America, as were nearby Pagosa Springs, Ouray, and Telluride.

The electronic guidebook was just released at the affordable price of $2.99 on barnesandnoble.com and Apple’s iBookstore, as well as on Amazon for the Kindle. Additional details about the 100 great towns are also presented on the associated website, http://www.greattowns.com.
