Durango Police Arrest Internet Luring Suspect

Durango, CO:  On January 11, 2011 the Durango Police Department arrested 19-year-old Durango resident John James Romero for Internet Luring of a Child, a Class 4 Felony. He was booked into the La Plata County Jail and is being held on a $25,000 Bond.

The police department learned of Mr. Romero on Tuesday when parents of two girls, one age 12 and one age 13, came forward with sexually explicit cell phone text messages as well as social media messages these girls received from Mr. Romero. Mr. Romero started conversations with these girls on Facebook and then obtained cell phone information. He continued correspondence through text messaging where these conversations quickly turned sexually explicit in nature.

The police department executed a search warrant on Mr. Romero’s residence in the Ryler Subdivision. Several computers and cell phones were seized during the execution of the search and they are being analyzed for further evidence in this case. This investigation is on-going and the police department suspects several more victims have yet to be identified.

If you have any information on this case or need to give information on a possible victim please contact Detective Trish Hutchens at 375-4733.
