Durango Police Launch K9 Program
Durango Police Launch K9 Program
In response to interest from the Durango community, the Durango Police Department has partnered with the National Police Dog Foundation to establish a Police K9 program in the City of Durango.
Police service dogs can assist not only in suspect apprehension, but also assist finding lost children, missing persons, and illegal substances such as narcotics and explosives.
Durango Police Chief David Felice enthusiastically supports launching a local K9 program as a force multiplier for improved response times and police coverage. “The Durango Police Department is proud to have been identified as a recipient of the National Police Dog Foundation, commented Felice. “A single dog greatly extends our ability to respond to community needs.”
The cost of obtaining a police dog typically exceeds $8,000, not including ongoing veterinary care, maintenance training, food and care. The National Police Dog Foundation is a non-profit organization established in 1998 to raise funds to launch and support Police K9 programs across the country. Those interested in supporting our local Police K9 program are encouraged to contact the National Police Dog Foundation at 1-888-459-7768 or www.NationalPoliceDogFoundation.org.
