Durango’s Cinco de Mayo to be held Sunday, May 2 at Buckley Park

 

DURANGO, CO – La Gente de Durango (the people of Durango) are proud to announce their plans to hold Durango’s Cinco de Mayo from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 2 at Buckley Park in downtown Durango.

 

This year’s Cinco de Mayo event will include cultural food, vendors, non-profit information booths, children’s games and piñata breaking. It’s an all-day, non-alcoholic entertainment for all ages. Live music will be provided by Albuquerque-based group named Chicanismo – a group that has special ties to the Durango community including two former Durango High School students who playing the band. Folkloric dance will be showcased and will feature the debut performance of the Fort Lewis College Baile Folklorico dance group that has been instructed by professional dance instructor Jen Cossey, who has been dancing this style of traditional dance since age 3. Other entertainment will be provided by local DJ’s and student-led groups that will explain the history about Cinco de Mayo.

 

Sponsors, vendors and volunteers for the event are currently being asked to contact El Centro de Muchos Colores for more information. The deadline for registering for a booth is Thursday, April 15 and the cost is $75 or $25 for nonprofit organizations. There are spaces for 20 booths and spots are awarded on first-come, first-served basis.

 

Any community members who are interested in helping plan this year’s Durango Cinco de Mayo event are invited to attend our grassroots planning committee meeting. Most meetings will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursdays in El Centro de Muchos Colores Hispano Resource Center at Fort Lewis College, room 156a in the center of Reed Library’s main floor.

 

This year’s Cinco de Mayo event is sponsored by Club del Centro along with the Unity Project, Fort Lewis College’s Hispanic Resource Center, Native American Center, modern language department, Center of Southwest Studies, CJ’S Diner, Serrano’s Inc. and various community members including a donation from the Alex Tejada of the Crane & Tejada PC.
