Sewage Leak Resolved

As of 6:00 p.m. last evening, City crews had repaired the leak in the sewer pipe and no sewage was leaking in to the river. Crews worked all day Monday to expose the section of pipe that was leaking, while pumping sewage out above the leak and transporting it directly to the wastewater treatment plant. The problem was identified where two cast iron pipes running parallel had broken in the same location immediately upstream of the concrete vault. The vault was removed and replaced with 12-foot sections of ductile iron pipe. Today, City crews continue to backfill the exposed pipe.

The west bank of the Animas River between the site (just north of the Skate Park) and the 9th Street Bridge remains posted with advisory signs by order of the San Juan Basin Health Department. City staff informed the river rafting companies last night that the Health Department had issued an advisory. Members of the public with water safety concerns are encouraged to contact the San Juan Basin Health Department’s Environmental Health division at 335-2054.
