Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad kicks off season

Annual Narrow Gauge Day Celebration set for May 1; features special guests.


DURANGO, Colo. –The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad kicks off its summer service to Silverton with the annual Narrow Gauge Day celebration at the Durango depot. This free community event is set for Friday, May 1, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.


In addition to a complimentary picnic for all in attendance, plus a performance by the Bar D Wranglers, the Lone Ranger will be making an appearance from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. to greet guests and give away silver bullets to the first 50 people he meets.


The Peanuts characters will also be part of the picnic, 11-11:30 a.m. and 1– 2 p.m. Members of CarbonZero will also give away 300 small trees that have been purchased by the railroad as part of the on-going “Green” efforts.


Railroad owner Al Harper’s private car, the General Palmer, and the first-class Silver Vista will both be on display, and admission to the Railroad museum will be free to the public, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.


The D&SNGRR begins summer service to Silverton Saturday, May 2 at 8:15 a.m., with the first train arriving in Silverton at 11:45 a.m. “Silverton Salutations” will be underway, and the railroad will host a complimentary continental breakfast in the Silverton depot at 10th & Cement Streets 10 to 11:30 a.m.  The Silverton Brass Band will provide entertainment.
