El Moro Spirits and Tavern wins Roots Restaurant Challenge

Statewide competition showcases Colorado’s farm-to-table culinary heritage

DURANGO, Colo. – One of Durango’s newest and most exciting restaurants, El Moro Spirits and Tavern, was honored by the Colorado Tourism Office, named the winner of the 2014 Roots Restaurant Challenge.

The goal of the challenge was to discover and spotlight hidden culinary gems that feature local products, are green-minded and sustainable, incorporate the history, heritage or farming lineage of the area, and/or utilize farm-to-table sourcing. The 2014 Roots Restaurant Challenge winners were named at the Taste of Colorado reception at the Governor’s Tourism Conference in Westminster, Colo. on Oct. 30.

“It was as if this challenge was designed specifically for us,” said Dave Woodruff, general manager, of the restaurant created in the original El Moro Saloon (circa 1900). “El Moro has allowed us to chase our passion for creative cuisine and fine beverage pairings in a sustainable environment. We thank the Colorado Tourism Office for this recognition.”

Embracing Durango’s “old west” and Victorian heritage, as well as contemporary culinary trends and techniques, El Moro Spirits and Tavern’s menu has been christened “modern rustic,” featuring simple and memorable dishes designed to blend classic, old world preparations with exciting techniques that have evolved from the modern cuisine movement.

The 40 entries from throughout Colorado were judged by a five-member panel of culinary and hospitality professionals. Criteria included how well the restaurants conveyed their history and local heritage through their menu and marketing communications.

“Colorado is rich in heritage, local pride, sustainable practices and regional specialties and this contest provided us an avenue to unearth and honor some of our culinary charms,” said Al White, director, Colorado Tourism Office.

Also recognized were Farm Bistro, Cortez, (2nd place); 626 on Rood, Grand Junction (3rd place); and The Fort, Morrison (special recognition). Sponsors included The Colorado Tourism Office Heritage and Agritourism, Colorado Restaurant Association, Colorado Proud, Slow Food and Champion Juicer.

El Moro Spirits and Tavern, located at 945 Main Ave., Durango, Colo., is open daily for lunch and dinner, as well as brunch on Saturday and Sunday. Reservations are recommended via Open Table, or by calling 970.259.5555. Additional information is available at www.elmorotavern.com.
