Keith Brant to run for Durango City Council seat Former financial controller looks to fiscal and environmental responsibility

Keith Brant, entrepreneur and owner of Durango Premier Vacation Rentals LLC, offering vacation rentals around Durango Mountain Resort, will officially file his petition to run for a seat on the Durango City Council on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013.

“I have a passion for this community and have developed clear guiding principles that will direct my decisions on City Council, should the voters choose to elect me,” said Brant, 43. “There are essential components to sustaining a vibrant community as well as a healthy environment, and we need to keep those top-of-mind.”

In considering City Council, Brant has established the following guiding principles for sustaining Durango:
·
Economic Viability – Fostering a business-friendly community and supporting our local businesses will result in a healthy local economy, which, in turn will help maintain the health, character and vibrancy of our local neighborhoods.
·
Environmental Stewardship – Understanding that everyone contributes in his or her own way, taking responsibility and supporting reasonable environmental policies will result in a healthy, sustainable community.
·
Fiscal Responsibility – Maintaining the City Council as effective and prudent guardians of the public resources, focusing on true priorities, essential services and realistic programs and projects, will best serve our community.

Brant most recently served as Financial Controller for La Plata Electric Association, joining the cooperative in 2008. He stepped down from the position in Sept. 2012 to devote his energy full time to Durango Premier Vacation Rentals, which he had launched in October 2011.
Since moving to Durango, Brant has actively sought opportunities for involvement in the community and ways to “give back.” He is currently a member of the Durango Area Tourism Office (DATO) Board of Directors and served on the Durango Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors 2009-2012, including a year as Board President. In addition, Brant has participated on the City’s Plastic Bag Taskforce and was the Chamber representative to the Durango Business Improvement District.

Prior to joining LPEA, Brant worked overseas as a finance manager in the oil service industry for Tidewater, the world’s largest international offshore marine transport company. Over his 10 years with Tidewater, he garnered experience in 30 countries.

“My diverse business background has provided me with a broad-based knowledge of business, economic development and community-specific concerns,” said Brant. “Traveling the world and living overseas also gave me true appreciation for Durango and the community as a whole. I feel very fortunate to live in Durango.”

Originally from Arizona, Brant earned his accounting degree from Arizona State University. He began his financial career in Los Angeles, working for L.A. County and then GTE before joining Tidewater.

A proponent of a healthy environment, Brant is an avid cyclist and commuted daily to LPEA in Bodo Park via bicycle year-round. While he no longer has a daily commute, he still rides his bike when going downtown. He can be routinely found snowboarding, hiking or camping in the region. He and his wife Sabrina Brant have two daughters, ages 5 and 7.
