Lightner Creek Fire

At approximately 3:30 p.m., a wild fire, which has been identified as the Lightner Creek Fire was reported in La Plata County approximately two miles up County Road 207 (Lightner Creek Road).  The fire began on private land and is burning onto State Division of Wildlife land.   La Plata County and 20 personnel from Durango Fire and Rescue Authority have responded to the wild fire and are providing protection for seven homes in the immediate area.  The fire is estimated to be approximately 10 – 12 acres at this time.  The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

A helicopter has been ordered to assist on steep slopes north of the homes and a heavy air tanker has been ordered from Albuquerque and is in route.  Water trucks from La Plata County Road and Bridge are on scene assisting with water supply

County Road 207 has not been closed.  La Plata County Sheriff deputies are patrolling in the area to warn residents and assist with traffic.  Motorists should drive slowly and carefully as they may encounter smoke, which will reduce their visibility.  Nighttime winds may push the smoke into Durango this evening and the smoke may be periodically visible in elsewhere in the County.
