LPEA supports Durango Gun Club “Sight-In Days”

Co-op helps cover costs for hunters preparing firearms for the season

DURANGO, Colo. – In an effort to both assist hunters and protect valuable electrical equipment, La Plata Electric Association will help underwrite “Sight-In Days” at the Durango Gun Club.

Oct. 8-9, 15-16 and 29-30, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Durango Gun Club will be open to the general public/hunters for rifle scope sighting. LPEA has contributed $500 to cover costs incurred by the club for the Sight-In Days. Hunters are encouraged to take advantage of the controlled environment to prepare their firearms for the season.

“We realize that hunting deer and elk is a tradition in this part of the country, and we know hunters need to sight their rifles in preparation,” said Steve Gregg, LPEA manager of operations. “It’s to everyone’s benefit that hunters not take aim at expensive electrical equipment. Just like an animal, when you shoot it, it stops functioning, and your neighbors’ electricity will be cut off.”

During the special Sight-In Days, Durango Gun Club staff, plus volunteer club members, will be on hand to answer questions, provide assistance and do minor firearms repair. Donations to the Club are welcomed, but no payment is required.

“We really want to help discourage sighting scopes in uncontrolled environments,” added Gregg. “Very simply, taking aim at LPEA equipment is vandalism. Beyond the expense and inconvenience to our customers, repair requires dangerous work by our LPEA crews to get everyone back in power.”

“We deeply appreciate the support and help that LPEA has given and is giving to the Durango Gun Club,” said Joe Perino, secretary/treasurer of the Durango Gun Club, noting that the club will also offer Hunter Education Courses September 23, 24 and 25, 6:30-10 p.m. ($10 per person) and October 9, 16 and 30, 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. ($20 per person). LPEA, a Touchstone Energy Cooperative established in 1939, provides to its nearly 30,000 members with more than 40,000 meters, safe, reliable electricity at the lowest reasonable cost, while being environmentally responsible. For further information, visit http://www.lpea.coop/.
