DURANGO, Colo. – Lt. Gov. Barbara O’Brien is bringing her Colorado Kids Outdoors tour to Durango Thursday, May 28.

Lt. Gov. O’Brien is holding forums across the state through September to discuss efforts to reconnect kids with the outdoors. Recent national studies show that children ages 8-18 spend six and a half hours a day connected to an electronic device.

“The importance of connecting kids to the outdoors shouldn’t be trivialized,” said  O’Brien. “Outdoor activities can help children to focus on learning, make them healthier and helps some behavior issues. The amount of time kids spend outdoors has been cut in half over the last 20 years, while the obesity rates have doubled.”

At 11 a.m., O’Brien will visit children participating in the Durango Parks & Recreation’s Summer Game Time/Kids’ Days field day activities at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Avenue. She will ask for ideas for the Colorado Kids’ Outdoor Bill of Rights that will be announced in June.

O’Brien will also meet with local stakeholders, 1-4 p.m., at the La Plata County Fairgrounds Extension Building, Florida/Pine Rooms, to discuss current local initiatives to connect Colorado kids to the outdoors.

Suggestions for the Colorado Kids’ Outdoor Bill of Rights can be made through May 31 by emailing [email protected] or sending them to Lt. Gov. Barbara O’Brien, 130 State Capitol, Denver, CO 80203. Include contact information. Further information on the tour and Colorado Kids’ Outdoor Bill of Rights is available at www.colorado.gov/ltgovernor.
