DURANGO – Dr. Harold Bailey, executive director of the New Mexico Office of African American Affairs, will be a special guest speaker at Fort Lewis College as part of the College’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration. Dr. Bailey will speak starting at 7 p.m. on Monday, January 18, at the Student Union Ballroom. The event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Bailey’s presentation, “Embodying the Dream: The Winds of Change,” will give the audience a historical perspective of the black experience in America and identify systematic changes made within our society. He will discuss how diversity and inclusion should be embraced by educational institutions and the need to emphasize community engagement.

“To embody the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., one must accept the Multi-Cultural concept and develop effective coalitions and partnership to address societal ills,” says Dr. Bailey. “It is our collective responsibility to empower, uplift and enlighten those less fortunate than many of us.”

Dr. Harold Bailey was raised in Albuquerque, NM, and received a doctorate of Philosophy in American Studies from the University of New Mexico. He is a former University of New Mexico faculty member and administrator; past director of UNM’s Afro-American Studies Program; State Education chairman of the New Mexico Advisory Committee to the United States Commission on Civil Rights; and former president of the Albuquerque NAACP.
