DURANGO, Colo. The City of Durango will hold a public meeting Thursday, May 7, 6 p.m., to introduce and review the full scope of the Downtown Streetscape Project scheduled to begin Fall 2009. The meeting is open to everyone and will be of particular interest to those who own property, have businesses or have general interest in downtown. The meeting will be held in the City Hall Council Chambers, located at 949 E. 2nd Ave.

The Downtown Streetscape Project plan is the result of earlier meetings, research, consultant studies and public input regarding the future direction of downtown. The plan reflects the majority interests and preferences previously voiced by downtown stakeholders with special emphasis on sidewalk and curb replacement only where needed, issues of public safety and cleanliness, and improvements in the overall pedestrian experience.

Included in the presentation will be progress reports and plans for the following:

  • Additional benches, bike racks and bike parking zones
  • Business directories and wayfinding signage
  • Downtown wi-fi capability
  • Litter, trash cans and re-cycling containers
  • Newspaper and real estate distribution box regulation
  • Pedestrian safety and crosswalk treatment
  • Replacement and repair of 15 percent of downtown sidewalks
  • Signature intersection treatment (College and Main)
  • Transit, Transit Center, trails and parking
  • Tree replacement plantings
