DURANGO, Colo. The City of Durango and the Colorado Department of Transportation invite citizens to attend the second public meeting to discuss development of the Access Control Plan for U.S. Highway 550 (Camino del Rio) from the Doubletree Hotel to 17th Street/Park Avenue, and the associated Camino del Rio Underpass Feasibility Study, Wednesday, May 6, 2009, 5 to 8 p.m. at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Avenue.

The purpose of the Access Control Plan is to determine appropriate access locations and movements to/from US Highway 550 (Camino del Rio) to improve safety for all users, preserve long term traffic flow efficiency and to provide safe, adequate access to adjacent properties and businesses. The purpose of the Underpass Feasibility Study is to determine the appropriate location for the bicycle/pedestrian underpass crossing of Camino del Rio linking downtown Durango to the Animas River Trail.

The three Access Control Plan alternatives to be discussed are:

(1) Leave the existing access condition as is

(2) Implement the most stringent interpretation of the State of Colorado State Highway Access Code

(3) Implement a balance between alternatives 1 and 2, taking into consideration public input received at the last public meeting

Pedestrian/bicycle underpass crossing alternatives at 12th Street to Discovery Museum and 12th Street to Veterans Way will also be discussed.

The public meeting will begin at 5 p.m. with an “Open House” format. Illustrations of accident history data on Camino del Rio, one of the highest volume roadways in southwest Colorado, will be displayed along with Access Control Plan and Underpass alternatives as well as other project information. Presentations will begin at 5:45 p.m.  The project team will be available before and after the presentation to answer questions. Citizens seeking information or wishing to express opinions about the Access Control Plan and Underpass Feasibility Study are encouraged to attend this meeting.
