San Juan Citizens Alliance Announces its 2009 6th Annual Oktoberfest

Located this Year on Second Avenue in Downtown Durango

Saturday, September 26th, and Sunday, September 27th

Durango, Color., September 2009 – San Juan Citizens Alliance is proud to present its 6th Annual Oktoberfest 2-Day Fundraising Festival in downtown Durango on Saturday and Sunday, September 26th and 27th. New this year for the Festival is its location, which will be on Second Avenue. Event Organizer, Carol Clark, said that everyone is excited that the fundraiser is getting to try something new and different.

Second Avenue is a great part of Durango with lots of incredible businesses,” said Ms Clark. “We believe that holding the Festival on Second Avenue will not only help to bring more awareness to those businesses located up there but also be a really fun environment for our event and its patrons.”

Helping to protect the environment, conserve energy, and work with the local breweries, are still primary focuses for the organizers of Oktoberfest. Since the event’s inception in 2002, it has grown every year attracting thousands of attendees, who are encouraged to ride their bikes to the festival and help with decreasing waste by using the recycling stations, composting waste receptacles and leaving no trace.

“We must continue to spread the word about keeping our environment healthy and clean,” said Ms. Clark. “Each year we try to find new and better ways to make sure the Festival is having as low of an impact on our environment as possible and sending a positive message to everyone.”

As always, attendees will be able to enjoy authentic German brats and handcrafted beers, a variety of other foods (including Zia Taqueria) and lots of fun activities for everyone including families and children. The music lineup includes; Alte Kamaraden, A-Dub Rock, Black Market Electric, Alpiners, Euforquestra, Warsawand Casper and the Mighty 602. Music will continue into the evening with the Pub Crawl.

All featured beer for Oktoberfest 2009 will come from Carvers Brewing Company, Durango Brewing Company, Ska Brewing, and Steamworks Brewing Company. Sunnyside Farms Market will provide local all-natural sausages that have been smoked with Ska beer.

The original Oktoberfest was held nearly two-hundred years ago on October 12, 1810 to celebrate the royal wedding of Bavarian King Ludwig I to Princess Therese. They were married in a meadow called Theresienwiese with festivities following for five days filled with bratwurst, bierz, and apfelstrudel. To this day, Oktoberfest continues to be celebrated in that same meadow and all around the world.
