Steamworks Firkin Fridays to feature devilishly good brew “Pink Devil” firkin to be tapped at 3 p.m., April 5, 2013

Durango, CO – Steamworks Brewing Co. continues its Firkin Fridays on April 5, 2013, offering up the unique “Pink Devil” firkin. The cask will be tapped at 3 p.m.

“The base is our Ale Diablo, which is a strong, golden ale,” said Steamworks Brew Master and Certified Cicerone® Ken Martin. “We re-fermented it with pureed black currants, which are small, dark and very tart berries, packed with nutrients and vitamins, specifically potassium, iron, phosphorus, vitamin B and a substantial dose of vitamin C. Do you think this firkin could be considered a ‘healthy beer’?”

A firkin is an old English unit of volume, typically a wooden cask equal to approximately one-quarter of a regular barrel, or nine gallons. Firkin beer is unpasteurized, unfiltered and naturally carbonated, or conditioned, it its cask. It is served at approximately 55 degrees – cool but not cold, and contains no preservatives, so is designed to be consumed after tapping.

“Our Ale Diablo has a fruity aroma and taste, so with the added currents this should be a very smooth brew enjoyed by fruit beer lovers,” said Brewer and Certified Cicerone® Spencer Roper. “But remember that the Ale Diablo has a potent ABV of 8 percent, and with the extra fermentables, it’ll probably be closer to 8.5 percent ABV. Thus our name for this firkin – Pink Devil. Pretty wicked.”
Steamworks initiated its Firkin Fridays to introduce unusual, specialty craft beers to patrons, and augment its regular, award-winning offerings.

Steamworks Brewing Co., open 11 a.m. to closing seven days a week, is located at 801 E. Second. Ave., Durango (970.259.9200).
