Step Into Spring: Start Indoors

Spring is just around the corner, but if you are anything like us here at DurangoDowntown.com, we’re sure you’re ready for Spring to be here yesterday! We can’t plant flowers outdoors just yet, hiking still requires snowshoes and gators, and down jackets are still necessary if you plan on lounging in the sun with a nice cup of tea.

So, we set out to find a few things you can do to step into Spring… without going to a warmer climate! Nancy Vanderwal, with Vanderwal Design was kind enough to give us a few tips.

Get Rid of Clutter

Take an objective look at your surroundings… get rid of unnecessary canisters old magazines, and mail that’s sitting on your counters. Go through closets and give away your fat/skinny clothes. Re-organize your basement. If stuff has been hanging around for 2+ years, you most likely won’t use it for another 2+ years. Get rid of it!

Once you’re finished de-cluttering, give your house a thorough deep cleaning. Don’t forget the cobwebs that have taken up residence in the corners of your ceilings and on light fixtures and be sure to remove the dust that has settled atop of your baseboards.

Don’t Be Afraid Of Color

Really nice accessories are a low cost way to shed new light on any room in your house. Try brightly colored throw pillows in the living room, a beautifully colored vase in the entryway, a new comforter for your bed, or a gold threaded glass bowl for the dining table.

Of course, another option is Paint! Paint is an effective way to spruce up your surroundings. Warmer toned colors, such as tans, peaches, and greens have a pleasant effect on the psyche after a gray winter.

Bring Outdoor Life Inside

Several places in town have affordable house plants that will both soften a room and improve air quality. Think large plants like ficus trees, corn plants, or palm trees. Create a nice ambient light in the room by adding a small light in the planter that shines up through the leaves of the plant, the plants will enjoy it too.

Other options: potted flowers! Gerbera daisy, tulips, and narcissus add bright cheerful color to any room in the house.  Don’t forget to spruce up the lou too.

Once all of these indoor project are complete, your home will feel like a fresh, new place and you’ll really be able to enjoy Spring when it finally rolls into town.  For more great ideas, or a private consultation with Nancy, contact Vanderwal Design at 970-385-9929.
