The Beast in the Garden author to speak at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College
DURANGO – David Baron, author of The Beast in the Garden, will speak at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College on Thursday, September 24, 2009. The free presentation begins at 7 p.m.
David Baron has built a career out of two of his passions: science (he studied physics at Yale) and radio. For more than a decade, he worked for National Public Radio as a science correspondent and substitute host of Talk of the Nation: Science Friday. Today, he serves as the health and science editor for the PRI/BBC program, The World, which is broadcast daily all over the world.
Mr. Baron’s pursuit of truth and understanding has sent him across the globe. He’s visited all seven continents, stood on the tops of volcanoes, as well as the bottom of the world at the South Pole. When he’s not working or traveling, he enjoys life and the outdoors at his home in Boulder, Colorado.
Over the years, much of his work has dealt with the often complex relationships between man and wildlife, and in 2000 he wrote his first book, The Beast in the Garden. The book explores the relationship between humans and mountain lions, a particularly appropriate subject given the amount of mountain lion sightings in this area. In addition to many positive reviews, The Beast in the Garden won the 2003 Colorado Book Award.
This year, Fort Lewis College has chosen The Beast in the Garden as its Common Reading Experience selection. The Common Reading Experience is a unique opportunity for all of campus to read, study and discuss the same book.
The College will be working with the Durango Public Library to expand the Common Reading Experience into the community through a variety of special events. Four Corners radio station KSUT will also be a partner as they have chosen The Beast in the Garden as their book of the month and will be presenting programs on it throughout September.
Mr. Baron recently spoke at Fort Lewis College’s Fall Convocation in August.
