The Durango Demons are one of Colorado’s top high school soccer teams. You’re watching the Local News Network brought to you by Servicemaster Restore and 2180 Lighting and Design. I’m Connor Shreve. After an undefeated seven-and-oh start the Demons moved into first place in the state 4-A soccer rankings on September 12th. So far they’ve yet to relinquish the State’s top 4-A spot. First year head coach Danny Suits credits his team’s experience as being one of the reasons for the great start.
You know, it’s a core group of very talented players that have been playing together for a really long time. They have really great chemistry. They understand each other, and I inherited a good group of kids. This is my first year coaching, and I’m super super pleased with the progress we’ve made this year. It’s always fun to go out and be 11-and-zero.
The offense is paced by Cedar Newman who’s tallied double digit goals while also leading the team in shots on goal. But Coach Suits points out that while it’s easy to get excited about the Demon’s offense, it’s his midfielders and defense that have pitched six shutouts and allowed just seven total goals through 11 games. But iron forges iron and Coach Suits is hoping for a few tough games to end the regular season.
Those are the matches that make us better so the better the competition. That’s what we want, we want to seek out the best teams in the state to play against. That’s how we get better. That’s how we challenge ourselves. That’s how we grow. So it’s a critical component of us being successful this year.
However, the season does end. It’s clear the group isn’t putting too much pressure on the results as much as the process.
It’s fun. These are, it’s a fun group of guys. They’re talented. They work hard, they’re good kids and it’s great to be a part of the community.
Durango has enjoyed the best start of any team in the Southwest region and has a match at home against Montrose to end the regular season on October 21st. The Demons do look poised to position themselves for a strong post-season run.
I think we can win every game, but I guess we’ll see.
