STUDENT REGISTRATION

Student registration kicks into gear beginning this Monday, August 9th for elementary students at 8:00 a.m.  Schedules for middle school and high school students are as follows:

  • Escalante Middle School
    • 6th Grade Registration/Open House – Tuesday, August 17th; Ice Cream Social at 5:30 p.m.; Registration at 6:00 p.m.
    • 7th Grade Registration/Open House – Wednesday, August 18th; Registration at 5:30 p.m.
    • 8th Grade Registration/Open House – Wednesday, August 18th; Registration at 7:00 p.m.
  • Miller Middle School
    • 6th Grade Registration – Monday, August 16th; 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
    • 7th Grade Registration – Tuesday, August 17th; 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

The first day of school for all Durango School District 9-R schools is Monday, August 23, 2010.



Below is the list of start and end times, including early release on Fridays:

  • Pre-School and Kindergarten
    • Pre-School and Kindergarten will enjoy a staggered start during the first week of school.  One-third of each class will go to school on either August 23rd, 24th, or 25th.  Then the entire class will start school on Thursday, August 26th.  Parents can choose the day their child will start during Registration on August 9th.  The start and dismissal times will be the same for Pre-School and Kindergarten students as other students at their school (listed below).
  • Elementary Schools –
    • Animas Valley Elementary – 7:45 a.m. – 2:50 p.m. (Fridays – 1:20 p.m.)
    • Florida Mesa Elementary – 7:50 a.m. – 2:50 p.m. (Fridays – 1:20 p.m.)

DURANGO HIGH SCHOOL

The DHS First Day of School schedule will begin at 8:15 a.m. for all incoming freshmen and new students.  All other DHS students are to report to school at 12:00 noon. (DHS Buses will run three hours late in the morning on the First Day of School)

On Monday, August 23rd there will be a mandatory meeting for all fall athletes, parents and coaches.  The meeting will take place in the DHS Gym beginning at 7:00 PM.  A short meeting will take place with each individual sport and activity after the meeting in various assigned rooms.


Durango High School will begin collecting PARTICIPATION FEES for athletics and activities beginning in the fall of 2010.  The purpose of these fees is to maintain activities at present levels by supplementing declining budgets.  Affected areas include all Athletic Teams and the following Activities:  Band/Colorguard, Colorado Mock Trial, FBLA, FFA, Knowledge Bowl, Orchestra, ProStart, Skills USA, and Speech & Debate.  The fee will be $50.00 per activity, with a cap of $100.00 per student and $150.00 per family per year.  Athletes should be prepared to pay their fee when they pick up their red card and students will not be eligible for participation until fees have been paid. All fall athletes trying out for a sport must have a physical, turn in all paperwork to the athletic office, pay participation fee and get your red card before you may begin practice.  Fall Sports/Band will begin on the following dates:

The staff of Durango High School’s newspaper, El Diablo, will be holding a garage sale in the school parking lot on Saturday, August 28, to raise money to attend a journalism conference. Students are asking community members to clean out their houses and garages and contribute to the sale. Congratulations to the Durango High School Aerospace Design Team for taking 2nd place at the International Design Finals at Johnson Space Center during the week of July 27th through August 3rd!   Look for more information next week.



ESCALANTE MIDDLE SCHOOL

Escalante Middle School Football for 7th and 8th grade students will begin Friday, August 13th at 7:30 a.m.   Practice will conclude at noon. 


Escalante Middle School Volleyball for 7th and 8th grade students will begin Monday, August 16th at 3:35 p.m. and will conclude at 5:30 p.m.

Beginning Fall 2010, Durango School District 9-R middle schools will collect a participation fee from students involved in athletics and competitive activities.  The purpose of these fees is to maintain middle school activities at the present level by supplementing declining budgets.  Affected activities include all athletics and Knowledge Bowl.  The fee will be $20.00 for the first activity and $15.00 for a second activity with a cap of $35.00 per student and a $50.00 cap per family per year.  Athletes should be prepared to pay their fee and complete all required paperwork when they begin their respective activity.

MILLER MIDDLE SCHOOL

First practice for MMS Football is scheduled for Monday, August 16th from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., running at the same time throughout the week.  When school starts, practice will be immediately after school until approximately 6:00 p.m.


First practice for MMS Volleyball is scheduled for Monday, August 16th from 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.   The schedule for the remainder of the week will be from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
