City of Durango and School District 9-R Form Additional Partnership

Durango, CO – The City of Durango and School District 9-R recently formed a partnership that has the City servicing the District’s trash needs.

“The City has worked with our students over the years to educate and inform them about recycling and other resource conservation measures and we recognize that it helps the recycling effort if we also work with the City on the trash services,” commented School Superintendent Keith Owen.  “This fits directly into the School District’s Strategic Plan, which encourages additional partnerships with local governments and stakeholders.”

“We are very excited to be providing trash service to School District 9-R,” commented Assistant City Manager Greg Caton.  “We have worked with theSchool District for years on their recycling efforts and now that we can service larger trash containers, it just makes sense to help them manage their entire waste stream.   I think one of the tipping points was the bundled pricing that we offer to our customers who utilize our trash and recycling services.  We look forward to working with the students on programs that support the sustainability efforts in our community.”

The Department of Sustainable Services handles the recycling and solid waste collection for the City of Durango.  The Department of Sustainable Services is an enterprise fund, which means that it does not receive general tax dollars.  All programs and services are provided through customer charges.  In 2009 the department was impacted by a decrease in revenue from the sale of recyclables.  Therefore, the solid waste revenues help to provide recycling services to the entire community.

Some other organizations that have recently switched trash service to the City of Durango include:  Christina’s Restaurant, Durango Coffee Company, East by Southwest, Southwest Book Trader, 8th Avenue Tavern, and Silver Peaks Condos.   Fort LewisCollege started receiving trash services from the City in January of this year.
