Grand opening of new $40.5 million Student Union at Fort Lewis College set for September 6

DURANGO – It’s finished at last! The official grand opening of the $40.5 million Student Union at Fort Lewis College will begin Tuesday, September 6 and run through Thursday, September 8, 2011. The grand opening events are open to the public, with the exception of the Tuesday night hypnotist and the Wednesday night movie.

Highlighting the first day of the grand opening will be the ribbon cutting and commemoration of the Union’s 39,000 square foot addition’s LEED Gold certification at 12 p.m. on September 6. LEED Gold is a recognition given to buildings built to high environmentally-friendly standards.

Tuesday will also be the day that many of the Student Union’s sponsored areas are dedicated. Individuals and organizations from the community donated to the Student Union campaign and their generosity will be recognized as the areas they sponsored will be officially named.

On Wednesday, the College’s annual Fiesta on the Mesa celebration will begin at 5 p.m. in the Student Union Plaza. Food, fun and live entertainment will continue until 7 p.m. For community members, the meal is $8 for adults and $4 for children ages 10 and under. For more information about Fiesta on the Mesa, please call El Centro at (970) 247-7654 or visit www.fortlewis.edu/elcentro.

Last, but not least, will be the FLC Bookstore Open House on Thursday, September 8. The latest Skyhawk gear will be available from 12 – 3 p.m., just in time for the FLC Men’s Soccer home opener at 3:30 p.m. at Dirks Field.

Fort Lewis College’s new Student Union is truly the students’ building. It was the student government that pushed for a new building. Their commitment to the project was made clear when the student senate voted to institute a new student fee in 2006 to pay for the building. The official groundbreaking took place in April 2009.
