New totem pole to honor Alaska Native students at Fort Lewis College
Durango, CO – To recognize and celebrate the hundreds of Alaska Native students who have earned and will earn Fort Lewis College degrees, the FLC Native American Center (NAC) is hosting a Totem Pole Raising Ceremony on January 16, 2013, at noon. The ceremony, which is free and open to the public, takes place at the Native American Center inside the Student Union. A feast will follow the ceremony.
The NAC commissioned David Boxley of the Tsimshian people to carve the totem pole. Mr. Boxley and the dance group, Git Hoan, will perform traditional songs and dances as part of the ceremony. The totem pole will be displayed inside theNative American Center.
