The Prevention and Healing of Sadness

By Deepak Chopra, MD, FACP, FRCP

We live in a society where being positive is offered as the best attitude a person can take to life. Yet sometimes this simply isn’t possible, and people find themselves facing temporary or long-term sadness. At such times, positivity isn’t much help because negative moods can have a life of their own.

How do you deal with being in sad gear? In times of crisis, the sad truth is that most of us become passive. We distract ourselves by watching more television or spending more hours on the computer. We wait for sadness to pass and carry on as if nothing bad is going on. Keeping up a good front is important in most people’s lives, yet behind the facade can lurk a good deal of fear.

Practice of the week: Mindful Expressive Movement

This practice encourages a deeper connection with your physical self and opens a channel for creativity and emotional expression, aligning with the rhythm of life.

  1. Set the Space: Find a quiet and open space where you feel comfortable. You can play calming or uplifting music that resonates with your mood.
  2. Grounding: Begin by standing with your feet firmly on the ground, taking a few deep breaths. Feel the connection between your body and the earth, allowing yourself to become present.
  3. Free Movement: Allow your body to move in whatever way feels natural. Let go of any expectations or judgments. You might sway, stretch, or dance with abandon. Focus on the sensations and emotions that emerge as you move.
  4. Integration: After a few minutes, gradually slow down and return to stillness. Take a moment to notice how you feel, both physically and emotionally. Reflect on any insights or shifts in perspective.

NEW BOOK Awakening Is Available for Preorder

For decades, I’ve explored one idea: awakening is possible for everyone. We live inside what I call a “waking dream,” a collective reality shaped by endless desires, demands, and conflicts. We sense that life shouldn’t be this difficult, yet we stay caught in patterns of struggle.

AWAKENING is an effort to resolve this struggle using a rational and accessible approach. I’m not asking for faith or reverence for ancient traditions; I’m offering a clear path, laid out with logic, designed to reveal the most profound truth about reality and about yourself.

My only request: Trust that awakening is natural. When you reconnect with your true nature, the freedom and lightness you seek become your natural state.

To support your journey, I’ve created a special bonus. I hope it serves you well as you begin this path of awakening.
