The Real History of the Americas takes a different look at the Western world

DURANGO – El Centro de Muchos Colores, Fort Lewis College’s Hispano resource center, proudly presents The Real History of the Americas program. The program runs from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Columbus Day, Monday, October 12, 2009, in the FLC Student Union, Vallecito Room (formerly the Memorial Student Lounge). The public is welcome at this free event.

The Real History of the Americas takes a positive, but different, look at the history of North and South America from the viewpoints of Hispanic, African-American, Asian, and Native peoples, among others. On display will be live art, poetry, film, dance and live music. Presenters include: the Savage Family, Molina Soliel & Aju, Hakim of Zeal and Ballet Folklorico. Food and refreshment will also be served.

“The program is about educating people on the different perspectives on history,” says Teahonna James, coordinator of the event, “to educate one another about each other’s experiences and backgrounds, so one day we may have a better understanding of one another in order to know how to respect each other’s ways of life. The goal is to break down the borders and walls that have been built between us so we may begin to support each other, to embrace and respect the diversity our communities represent. All expressed through each individual’s medium of art.”

Sponsors for The Real History of the Americas include: Club Del Centro, El Centro de Muchos Colores, Student Union Presents, the Old Fort Farm, the Unity Project, Compañeros, and the Buffalo Council.

Following The Real History of the Americas event will be a screening of the film, “Papers.” The film examines the lives and challenges of the millions of undocumented children that live in the United States. The screening takes place at the Vallecito Room at 6 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
