Clean Commute Week Encouraged Healthy Transportation Alternatives

Durango, CO – The City of Durango sponsored Clean Commute week from June 16th through the 22nd. An estimated 760 residents participated in the week long schedule of events, almost 5% of the City’s population. The midweek Clean Commute breakfast stations were well attended this year both downtown and at Mercy Regional Medical Center with clean commuters saving our skies from 3,394.43 pounds of Greenhouse Gas Emissions.

New this year were events such as the Pedometer Challenge to encourage walking, the Transit Challenge which gave Durango Transit riders chances to win prizes and the Love Your Commute Party co-sponsored by SKA Brewing and Zia Taqueria during SKA-B-Q. For the third consecutive year, the City sponsored the Pedal vs. Metal Competition with Jason Meininger repeating his victory over a field twice as large as last year. This year’s Commuter of the Year, Laura Caughey, who works at Natural Grocers by Vitamin cottage, was nominated by a record number of co-workers and beat out other worthy Clean Commuters to win a special prize donated by the Spaaah Shop.

Approximately 60 Durango businesses donated over $10,000 in Free Transit Day sponsorships, food and drinks, and prizes for the happy participants this year, showing tremendous support from the local community to promote a healthier and cleaner local environment.
