“Insulate Colorado” rebates extended to second/rental homes

DURANGO, Colo. – The “Insulate Colorado” program, a $25,000 rebate effort to encourage homeowners in La Plata and Archuleta counties to weatherize and insulate their homes, has been expanded to include rental units and vacation homes. The deadline to apply is Dec. 31, 2008.
“Originally the rebate program, which was initiated by the Colorado state Governor’s Energy Office, or GEO, and formerly called “Insulate and Seal,” was only available to primary homeowners,” said Aileen Tracy, executive director for the Four Corners Office for Resource Efficiency (4CORE), which is administering the grant locally. “Now landlords can insulate their rental units, which will help their tenants save on utility bills and increase the value of their units. Plus, second homeowners who may not live locally can now take advantage as well.”
According to Tracy, improving attic insulation tops the list for increasing a home’s energy efficiency, potentially reducing heating costs 20 to 30 percent depending on the type of insulation and sealing techniques utilized. Wall insulation furthers utility bill reduction, improves comfort and helps the environment, she said.
The one-time rebates will cover 20 percent of a homeowner’s insulation project, or $300, whichever is less. Work must be completed by a GEO-trained and approved contractor (a list of which is available on the 4CORE web site, www.fourcore.org). Do-it-yourself upgrade projects are not eligible. Copies of all contractor invoices and official insulation cards must be submitted with the application.
“With the economic slow-down, this is a good opportunity for contractors to participate in the GEO training,” said Tracy, encouraging insulation contractors to contact her directly for information. “As part of Colorado’s New Energy Economy, we will likely see more energy efficiency rebate programs in the future. Contractors will need to be GEO-trained to take advantage of the opportunities.”
Applications for the “Insulate Colorado” rebate are available for download at www.fourcore.org, or call 970.259.1916 with questions or to receive an application via the mail. Return completed forms to 4CORE Insulate Colorado Program, 10 Town Plaza, #190, Durango, Colo. 81301.
