The Eighties are coming back…at least to Durango for a few days! Snowdown, our annual winter celebration, once again takes over the town January 27-31. Since 1979, Snowdown has existed in Durango to add some variety and fun in the middle of what may seem like a long, cold winter. This year that is especially true, as we have had so much snow. Each year the theme is different, but for five days, the town is full of activities for all ages. This change in pace breaks up the winter season and adds a new zest of life in January.
This year, the Eighties and all their glory will reign for the weekend. The theme, “Back to the Eighties” ensures a fun and unique weekend. Crazy hair and outfits, movies, and music comprise this era that many of us lived through, and now we have a chance to revisit the nuances!
Events through the weekend cover the spectrum. From entertainment to games, contests to costumes, it is one exciting week. Those interested will find contests—such as the Snowdown Doughdown Doughnut eating contest or the Snowdown Costume contest, and the Waterslide-A- thon or Karaoke. Several options exist to satisfy any interest a person may have! Day and night activities are available. Other fun options include an underwater adventure hosted by Splash Down Diving, a cornhole tournament, chili cook-off, trivia and game activities at local bars, and some great family-friendly activities as well.
For entertainment, the Snowdown Light Parade is always one of the top attractions for the week. Friday evening at dusk, the parade takes over Main Avenue, and spectators bundle up for the floats and lights. The Snowdown Follies also remains a Snowdown tradition. This adult entertainment show has been in place for years and always brings in large audiences. Others love to watch the rivalry between the Purgatory Mountain Patrol and and Ski/Snowboard school in the annual Snowdown Ski Softball contest, where they play softball on skis and snowboards.
Whatever you find interesting, the odds are you’ll find something to challenge the boredom you may feel this winter. Snowdown is a fantastic community event, and we are so fortunate to live in a place where so many members of the community contribute to create a unique lifestyle.
