Boating and Tubing on the Animas River
“Recreation on the Animas River in Durango is increasing with the warm July temperatures. The City of Durango Parks and Recreation Department would like to encourage river users to be good stewards of the Animas River Greenway. Follow the “Leave No Trace” principles by packing out all trash and using the established river access locations to put-in and take-out rafts, kayaks and inflatable tubes. The City provides river access at 33rd Street, 29th Street in Memorial Park, 9th Street in Schneider Park, Santa Rita Park, Cundiff Park, High Bridge and Dallabetta Park.

Durango, CO – Recreation on the Animas River in Durango is increasing with the warm July temperatures. The City of Durango Parks and Recreation Department would like to encourage river users to be good stewards of the Animas River Greenway. Follow the “Leave No Trace” principles by packing out all trash and using the established river access locations to put-in and take-out rafts, kayaks and inflatable tubes. The City provides river access at 33rd Street, 29th Street in Memorial Park, 9th Street in Schneider Park, Santa Rita Park, Cundiff Park, High Bridge and Dallabetta Park.
Tubers are encouraged to ride the “T” for tubing! Tubers can park and get on the free trolley on the south end of town with an deflated tube (inflated tubes are not allowed on the trolley) and ride to the north end of Durango where they can fill their tube with free compressed air at the 29th Street river access in Memorial Park. Public restrooms are also located along the Animas River Greenway throughout Durango for the convenience of the boating community.
The Animas River is a highly enjoyed recreational amenity in Durango and river users should be respectful of the residential neighborhoods located along the river corridor. Alcohol is not permitted on the river nor at the river access locations on City property and the open container law is being enforced by the Durango Police Department. River users are encouraged to wear a Coast Guard approved life vest and secure foot gear. Inexperienced boaters and tubers should exit the river at 9th Street in Schneider Park and not float through Smelter Rapids in Whitewater Park.
