Heads Up! Purgatory’s Giving Away Three Season Passes

Students & Kids — Enter a Contest that Promotes Wearing Helmets on the Slopes & Win a Free Pass!

Durango, CO – Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort is hosting a contest on helmet safety and will give away three season passes to the winners. Kids ages 6 to 18 years are eligible to participate, and the contest is broken into three age categories: 6-9 years, 10-13 years and 14-18 years.

The theme of this year’s contest is “Helmets Rule” and it’s up to the kids how to convey the message. Kids can get creative and enter a poem, drawing, painting, poster, song, short story, video or whatever else they want. They just need to represent that it’s important to wear helmets on the slopes in their creative entry. Submissions are due by Dec. 13, 2012 at 4:55pm and should be dropped off at the DMR Bodo office, 327 S. Camino del Rio, Durango in the Centennial Plaza. Entries must be the original work by the child, and only one entry per child will be accepted.

A panel will select a winner from each of the three age categories, and these kids will be provided a free season pass at Purgatory for the 2012/2013 season. A winner who is already season pass holder will be reimbursed for the amount paid for the pass.

Complete contest rules are posted at www.DurangoMountainResort.com/helmets.

One of Durango Mountain Resort’s priorities is to promote safety among its employees and guests. Durango Mountain Resort recommends the use of helmets when skiing or riding and continues to require the use of helmets by children ages 14 and under who are enrolled in Ski and Ride School programs. This season, Durango Mountain Resort implemented a mandatory helmet policy for its employees. This new policy requires employees who are skiing, snowboarding or snowmobiling while in uniform or in connection with their job duties to wear a snow sports helmet. Employees are eligible for reimbursement up to $40 for the cost of the helmet. Helmets, when worn properly, have been shown to offer a degree of protection from head injuries from contact with the snow surface or other natural and man-made objects while skiing or snowboarding. It is critical to note that helmets are a second line of defense for preventing injuries. Skiing and snowboarding safely and responsibly is the number one key to overall slope safety.

Durango Mountain Resort is recognized as a top family-friendly resort and has one of the best Ski and Ride Schools in the region. Purgatory provides snow enthusiasts many ways to enjoy the winter wonderland with 88 trails, five terrain parks and 1,360 skiable acres. With 10 chairlifts and rarely any lines, it’s simple to zip around the mountain and enjoy the spectacular scenery amidst the rugged San Juan Mountains. Other winter fun activities include snow tubing, Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, horse-drawn sleigh rides, snowbiking, backcountry skiing, snowmobiling and more.
