Jan Derck has been hired to be the manager of the Iron Horse Training program.
Jan has been cycling since the 1980’s. She became serious about cycling after moving to Durango in 2002. A former marathon runner, Jan took up cycling after many years of long distance running. She is a retired urban planner who has managed public and private sector planning departments, and will bring her management experience to the Iron Horse Training program.
Jan has ridden the Iron Horse three times and the Quarter Horse once, and has participated in the training program for the last four years. She has been serious about fitness since high school, participating in team sports, running races and triathlons. Jan believes in a comprehensive approach to fitness that includes aerobic exercise, weight training and stretching for flexibility. She will add this knowledge and expertise to the program.
Iron Horse Training offers a six month training program starting on December 5th through May. The Iron Horse Training program starts with 16 weeks of indoor riding on spin bikes, along with information about nutrition, strength training, climbing and 8 weeks of training outside starting April 7th, culminating with the ride on Saturday May 26th, 2012. The training is for both participants who want to complete the Quarter Horse or those who want to go all the way to Silverton. There are classes at Anytime Fitness, the Durango Rec Center and on-line.
The Iron Horse Bicycle Classic is held in Durango, Colorado on May 26, 2012. It is a 50 mile road ride from Durango to Silverton over 2 mountain passes on a closed road. www.ironhorsebicycleclassic.com
