PURGATORY TO KICK OFF FESTIVE WEEKEND OF FIRSTS
Legends Terrain opens Sunday [Locals Day] with music and fun all weekend long
Durango, CO – The only major Colorado ski resort to be 100-percent open this weekend, Purgatory is gearing up for the grand opening of the new Legends expert terrain and enjoying excellent December snow conditions. The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Legends Expansion is scheduled for 11 a.m. this Sunday, Dec. 20, when two modern-day legends – Durango Mountain Resort’s senior vice president of mountain operations Mike McCormack and vice president of base area operations Jim “Hoody” Hards – will be on hand to christen their namesake runs.
“McCormack’s Maze” and “Hoody’s” comprise 125 acres of steep, tree-skiing terrain unlike anything ever skied before at Purg. “This project has been a long time in the making, and it’s an honor to have a run named after me,” McCormack said. “The new terrain is so different from anything else we have. You’ll just have to ski it to fully appreciate it. It’s a lot of fun.”
Also on tap at DMR this weekend, Sunday is Locals Day, with $39 lift tickets available with a coupon from this week’s Durango Telegraph and on Buzztown.com. A portion of the proceeds will benefit KSUT public radio and the Manna Soup Kitchen. Wear your ugliest holiday sweater and stop by the Buzztown booth in the plaza for a chance to win a $50 Guido’s gift card.
Friday at 4 p.m. is the kickoff party for the new, outdoor “Bear Bar” on Purgy’s beach, with special discounts for anyone sporting bear-related attire. Friday night is karaoke night at the new Creekside Italian Kitchen, hosted by Jin Ghun. Don’t forget to enter the drawing to win a free pair of Spy ski goggles.
Saturday marks the grand opening of the new Pitchfork Pub overlooking the Pitchfork terrain park. Grab a drink from the new teen drink menu and kick back to the sounds of the Hounds of Purg, live at the Powderhouse from 11:30 to 2:30. Also on Saturday, demo the latest ski and snowboard gear from Never Summer and Salomon. On Saturday evening, the Creekside jams out to Motivator, featuring Charlie Harmer on blues guitar from 6-11 p.m., with local drink specials.
On Sunday at 4 p.m., Santa Claus will ride his sleigh into the base area for the lighting of the Purgatory Christmas tree, with holiday music and candy canes for the kids. Sunday evening at the Creekside features live music by Greg Ryder starting at 5 p.m., with sports on the new 42-inch flat-screen TV.
