Nagata Shachu brings to Durango new traditions for Japanese “taiko”

Powerful drumming group to take the Community Concert Hall stage on Oct. 28

Durango, CO – Rejuvenating the ancient art form of Japanese taiko through innovative and exciting music, Nagata Shachu comes to the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2015, 7:30 p.m.

Based in Toronto, Canada, Nagata Shachu has enthralled audiences with its mesmerizing and heart-pounding performances of the Japanese drum (taiko) since its formation in 1998.

As noted The Record.com, “What makes these performers irresistible is their extremely high level of musicianship evidenced in their virtuosic technique, discipline, precision, and energy. At the same time there is an air of humility and grace as they enthusiastically bound around the stage assuming various percussion configurations.”

Rooted in the folk drumming traditions of Japan, Nagata Shachu has the unique distinction of being the only group outside of Japan with the sponsorship of four major Japanese drum manufacturers. Since 1999, the ensemble has rehearsed in its own fully-equipped and dedicated taiko studio.

Under the direction of Kiyoshi Nagata, the ensemble has earned recognition for its exciting, straightforward, yet physically demanding performances, as well as for its diverse repertoire. Nagata is Canada’s pre-eminent taiko soloist with a career that spans 25 years.

Nagata Shachu features a vast array of Japanese taiko (including the massive O-Daiko), gongs, bells, wooden clappers, shaker and bamboo flutes, ultimately producing a wide spectrum of sound. The performance is the combination of unbounded spirit with the highest levels of musicianship and discipline, offering an unforgettable experience that is both powerful in expression and heartfelt in its sincerity.
