It’s Running Season
Durango Running Company will celebrate spring and dry trails with a kick-off party for their Wednesday night group trail runs on April 12.
Purgatory Ends Season With a Splash
Purgatory Resort closed its regular season with a pond skimming contest that attracted hundreds of spectators and 75 contestants who tried to ski or snowboard across a pond of icy water. With 5 feet of snow still on the ground, Purgatory plans to open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through the end of April.
Returning to the Theater
Durango artist Paul Folwell still remembers the Fort Lewis College production of a play he co-wrote with a friend in 1968. Now, Folwell is returning the favor with an exhibit and fundraiser featuring his paintings: they’ll be on display in the Theater Department’s lobby through April 2. A reception will be held from 6-7p.m. on Thursday, March 30.
Training Future Olympians
More than a hundred elementary and middle-school-aged skiers proved their mettle last week at the Hampton Inn State Mogul Skiing Championships at Purgatory Resort. These are kids who we may see on the U.S. Olympic Ski Team or the World Pro Ski Tour one day. Durango TV News finds out more.
DATO Sells Craft Beverage Tours
A new Durango Area Tourism Office marketing campaign will feature all of Southwest Colorado’s craft beverages: producers of craft sodas and ciders will be highlighted alongside the region’s breweries, wineries and distilleries.
Global Snow Research in Silverton
A NASA-funded worldwide research project on global water supplies included a slice of the San Juan Mountains last month, thanks to the Silverton Avalanche and Snow Studies Center. Durango TV News team Deb Uroda and Brian Gill recently snowshoed into the research site to learn more about the project.
Animas River Trail to Extend North
Construction on a two-year project to extend the Animas River Trail north to Oxbow Park and Preserve is expected to begin this spring. The project also includes a new footbridge over the Animas, a pedestrian overpass across 32nd Street, and a new sidewalk for the neighborhood north of 37th Street.
Finally, a Formal Housing Program
The City of Durango is developing a new comprehensive housing plan to address the city’s chronic housing shortage. City planners are seeking input from residents through an online survey to further guide the process.

Plenty of Snow Ready for Skijoring
With snowpack reaching 200 percent above average in the area, Silverton, Colorado will have plenty of cover for its 8th-annual skijoring competition. Event organizers hope this year’s epic snow conditions will attract more than 3,000 spectators over President’s Day Weekend.

EPA Releases Final Gold King Report
