CINCO DE MAYO

A traditional Mexican holiday, Cinco de Mayo has made its way into the United States as a lively fiesta. Especially in places that have Mexican influence this holiday is celebrated at many local residences and businesses.

The Three Durangos

Durango, Colorado is one of the world’s three “Durangos” alongside Durango, Mexico and Durango, Spain. Durango, Colorado was named after Durango, Mexico and has a wonderful influence of Mexican culture. From street names like “Florida (floor-ee-da) Road” and the “Animas River” flowing through town to locally owned and run Mexican restaurants and other businesses, you can see some of the overlap of the Three Durangos.

What is Cinco De Mayo?

Cinco de Mayo, the Fifth of May, is celebrated in commemoration of the Mexican’s victory over the French during the Battle of the Puebla in 1862. Commonly mistaken for Mexico’s Independence Day, Cinco de Mayo is primarily celebrated in the town of Puebla with parades, dances, speeches, reenactments, and celebration as remembrance of the resistance.

In the 20th century, Mexican immigrants brought the Cinco de Mayo celebration into the United States in honor of their heritage. Today, parties are held to celebrate the holiday with Mexican food, music, and margaritas. In areas with a large Mexican-American population such as Los Angeles, Houston, and Phoenix, there are much larger parades and more prominent celebrations.
