Durango Independent Film Festival Kicks Off This Week

This week and weekend, Durango welcomes the 12th Annual Durango Independent Film Festival. March 1-5 will see an event-filled weekend dedicated to celebrating a variety of independent films. Types of films include: feature length films, short and feature-length documentaries, animated films, family films, and more.

Durango has hosted a film festival since 2001, although the name of the organization has morphed over the years. We are grateful to have festivals in our town; they are so valuable for tourism, education, and expanding culture. For a town our size, it is very impressive that we are able to accomplish this.

Films show at the Gaslight, Animas City Theatre, and on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday a screen at Durango Stadium 9 Theatre will be used.

In addition to showing the films, the festival hosts events throughout town. A kickoff party will be held at the Ore House on Wednesday evening. On Thursday there will be a Native Cinema Reception at Sorrel Sky as well as a Craft Beer and Culinary Crawl throughout town. Friday events include a party to meet the filmmakers. Saturday has a late night VIP party as well as a show with special guest Jim Belushi and the Sacred Hearts. Sunday the festival ends with a wrap up party. This is a full weekend of events, and that doesn’t even include the film showings!

Those in the filmmaking industry will also appreciate the panels and workshops held throughout the weekend. Topics include: Keeping It Local-Making a Film in the Four Corners, The Social Value of Cinema, and Stories from the Frontlines of Filmmaking.

Take a look at their website for more information, and times and pass information for the shows: http://durangofilm.org/wp/
