Canadian folk trio the Good Lovelies set for the Community Concert Hall

Local favorite Lisa Blue, with Gary Cook and Hal Lott, opens the April 18 show

Durango, CO: Called funny and upbeat with just a pinch of sass, the Good Lovelies will take the stage at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College, Wednesday, April 18, 7:30 p.m. Local favorite Lisa Blue, performing with Gary Cook and Hall Lott will open the show.

The Good Lovelies are said to have enlivened the folk music landscape with their three-part harmonies, instrument swapping and witty on-stage banter since Canadians Caroline Brooks, Kerri Ough and Sue Passmore joined forces in 2006.

The band members differ in their remembrance of just how they got together (Passmore remembers meeting her bandmates during a limbo competition; Brooks thinks they met at a chess tournament; and Ough is convinced they first crossed paths during a bar fight), but their success has proven undeniable since these began harmonizing. Touring the Canadian provinces from coast-to-coast, the Good Lovelies became an immediate smash with audiences in their homeland, and are now “spreading the love” with tours to Australia, the United Kingdom and the U.S.

The Lovelies’ rain-or-shine outlook and visible mutual respect have helped the trio weather the years of constant touring and made them the darlings of the summer festival circuit, including spots at the legendary Mariposa and Hillside festivals and the Montreal Jazz Festival. The trio has toured with Stuart McLean and the Vinyl Café, and appeared on stage and in studio with Broken Social Scene, Kathleen Edwards and Jill Barber.

Winner of New Emerging Artist at the Canadian Folk Music Awards, as well as taking home a Juno for Roots/Traditional Album of the Year in 2010, the trio is touring to promote its third, full-length album, Let the Rain Fall, an ode to camaraderie. With equal parts city and country, highway and home, wistfulness and attitude, the Good Lovelies’ good humor and self-assurance continues to charm audiences.

Of the Good Lovelies, Canada’s Opasquia Times wrote, “Armed with a pile of instruments, a repertoire of sassy and sophisticated songs and an effervescent sense of humor, they never fail to charm even the toughest audiences.”

The Good Lovelies share stories from life on the road and perform “Kiss Me in the Kitchen” from the album Let the Rain Fall at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcHc2yLZgZU&feature=related.

Harvested from Hawaii and replanted in Durango, Lisa Blue grew up listening to The Grand Ole Opry. A revered songwriter, Lisa was instrumental in the creation of The Durango Songwriters Rendezvous, the local chapter of The Nashville Songwriters Association, and had a hand in producing The Songwriters Showcase for the former DCAT. She also paid her dues in Hollywood, managing a music studio and writing and performing music for film and television.

Accompanying Blue for the Good Lovelies show are Gary Cook from the Bar-D Wranglers (guitar) and Hal Lott of the Kirk James Blues Band (bass). Blue and Lott have performed together regularly as part of the Lisa Blue Trio. Blue has also teamed up with Cook and the Wranglers during the Christmas season, and the pair is currently recording an album of lullabies for Blue’s new grandson Colt.

“I am, as always, honored to be a member of Durango’s music community and excited to again play my favorite venue anywhere, the Community Concert Hall,” said Blue, who has also opened at the Concert Hall for Ray Price and Marty Stuart. “Thematically I will include songs by some of the best songwriters of our time, and will also include a few original tunes.”

Tickets for the Good Lovelies, with special guest Lisa Blue, ($18/$25) are available on-line at www.durangoconcerts.com or by calling 970.247.7657, or at the Ticket Office in Downtown Durango at 7th St. and Main Ave. All sales final.

Showtime is 7:30 p.m., with doors to the Concert Hall and concessions, serving beer, wine and non-alcoholic beverages and snacks, opening at 6:30 p.m.

The Community Concert Hall is a not-for-profit, multi-use performance venue located on the campus of Fort Lewis College. Its ability to bring a diverse spectrum of shows to Southwest Colorado is made possible through a partnership with the college, a state-supported, independent institution of higher education, and through financial and in-kind contributions from generous members of the community.
