What Types Of Aftercare Programs Are Available Following Addiction Treatment?

When someone has completed addiction treatment in a rehab center, they can sometimes feel daunted by the prospect of returning home. In the majority of cases, an aftercare program is devised for their specific needs to provide continued support after rehab.

Here we take a look at the types of aftercare programs available:

Individual and Group Counseling

When someone is learning how to cope with life in recovery, they often need a little extra support from aftercare treatment in the early days at home. Having access to regular counseling as part of an aftercare program provides many recovering addicts with a solid support network they can lean on to prevent relapse.

Booster Rehab Sessions

Sometimes someone leaving rehab may feel the need to return a few months down the line and attend what is known as a “booster” session. Not all treatment facilities offer this service as part of substance abuse aftercare but the ones that do usually offer booster sessions to debrief patients about their experiences so far in recovery and teach them any new coping skills they may need to reduce the likelihood of relapse. These sessions are intended to boost motivation and encourage continued sobriety and are effective as part of substance abuse aftercare.

Dual Diagnosis Support

Patients who are referred to as dual diagnosis are dealing with addiction and another co-occurring mental health condition. Sometimes people can have a mental illness that leads them to self-medicate with drugs or alcohol and in other cases, they develop the symptoms as a direct result of substance abuse. Dual diagnosis patients are likely to need continued aftercare treatment due to the complexity of their conditions and how they interact with each other.
