Fall Weekend in Durango Itinerary

Durango fall

Durango, Colorado is a mountain town that offers a little bit of everything. No matter what your style is, there is a trail, shop, or spa for you to enjoy. During the fall, the weather is cooler and the activities are limitless. While you’re in town, check out these top picks and maybe you’ll decide to stay for a while!

Arriving:

-Fly into Durango – La Plata County Airport (DRO) and take Durango Cab or Buckhorn Limousine to your hotel or VRBO. There are many accommodations to choose from in downtown, in a local’s Airbnb, or 30 minutes North at Purgatory Resort.

-Relax, unpack, and head downtown to a local restaurant for a bite to eat while you scope out the town. Take the evening to do some window shopping and get acclimated!

First Day:

-There’s no time to waste, but don’t forget breakfast! If your hotel doesn’t provide complimentary breakfast, try out one of Durango’s cafes. You can choose from College Drive Café, Durango Diner, Lone Spur, or Oscar’s just to name a few.

-If you want to get outside to hike or bike, try Animas Mountain. The trail head is accessed from North Main Avenue and offers incredible views of town and the Animas Valley. It is six miles roundtrip, but there are shorter loops available, or you can make it an out-and-back. If you are looking for a more relaxing option, try out the newly remodeled Durango Hot Springs Resort. They offer 24 different pools to soak in, a sauna, spa services, concessions, and sunbathing lawn. They also host live music!

-For dinner, try out a North Main restaurant. The up-and-coming district of Durango houses Sage Farm Fresh Eats, Zia Taqueria, Homeslice Pizza, Union Social House, Bird’s, and more, providing a plethora of cuisines.

-Check to see if there’s a band playing at the Animas City Theater or maybe catch a comedy show at The Starlight Lounge.

Second Day:

-Fall in Southwest Colorado creates a color-changing scene beyond our wildest imagination. For an easy day trip, you can drive on the San Juan Byway (US 550 N) towards Silverton. As you go over Colbank and Molas passes you will be greeted with orange, yellow, red trees. It’s a perfect setting to stop for a picnic at Little Molas or Andrews Lake.

–Downtown Durango offers 5+ blocks of locally owned and operated shops. There are jewelry boutiques, art galleries, outdoor supplies, bike shops, antiques, and of course t-shirt shops. Whether you are looking for a new art piece to complete a room in your house or a new pair of trial runners, you can find it here!

-Main Street is home to many different restaurants that have something for everyone. As the night cools off, try a fresh, hot, and delicious steak at the Ore House, homemade pasta at Primi, or a burger to accompany house-brewed beer at Carver’s.

These are just some of the activities our town has to offer and we would love to talk about more options for your stay here in Durango.
