Steamworks-Animas Valley Half-Marathon seeking volunteers

Marc Witkes Scholarship/Durango Motorless Transit benefit from June 9 event

Durango, CO – The Steamworks-Animas Valley Half-Marathon, set for Saturday, June 9, 2012, is seeking volunteers to assist on race day. Those interested are asked to contact co-race director Liz Feazell, 970.903.6145 or [email protected].

“Having volunteers serve as race officials helps us put on a successful event and ultimately make sizable donations each year to the Mark Witkes Memorial Scholarship and Durango Motorless Transit,” said Kris Oyler, Steamworks co-founder and race co-sponsor with the Durango Sports Club. “It’s a fun morning and all for a couple of good causes.”

In 2011, the Steamworks-Animas Valley Half-Marathon raised more than $3,000 apiece for the Witkes scholarship and Durango Motorless Transit, which helps fund running activities in the region. The Marc Witkes Memorial Scholarship is presented annually to a Four Corners area cross country runner attending Fort Lewis College. Witkes, an avid runner and former president of Durango Motorless Transit, passed away Dec. 10, 2006.

The half-marathon, which will sport a sold-out field of 300 runners, begins in the North Animas Valley near Bakers Bridge, and winds south along East Animas (CR 250) for 13.1 miles, to conclude at the Durango Sports Club. Runners and volunteers will enjoy a post-race craft beer and burger barbecue lunch at the Sports Club, catered by Steamworks.

Steamworks Brewing Co. is located at 801 E. Second. Ave., Durango (970.259.9200).
